In this English USA lesson you will learn to understand occupations and the kind of work people do. Martin Learner is attending a parent and teachers meeting at the school he visited recently.

3. Martin Learner is attending a parent and teachers meeting this evening. He meets some of the parents of the children from the school he visited recently.

16. WENDY: Hi. I teach third grade.

17. HAL: Martin visited my room today.

18. MARTIN: Yes. I saw the geography lesson.

19. WENDY: You're a reporter.

20. MARTIN: Yes, I write stories for the Voice of America. I'm writing a story about schools.

21. HAL: Martin, this is Mrs. Bane.

22. MRS. B: We've met.

23. HAL: And this is Mr. Bane.

24. MARTIN: Hello.

25. MR. B: Hello. You're a teacher?

26. MARTIN: No, I'm a reporter.

27. MR. B: A reporter?

28. MARTIN: I'm writing a story about schools.

29. MR. B: I see.

30. MARTIN: What do you do?

31. MR. B: I'm a contractor. I build schools.

32. MARTIN: Wonderful.

33. WENDY: Martin, come meet Mrs. Steele.

34. MARTIN: Excuse me, Mr. Bane, Mrs. Bane.

35. WENDY: This is Jessica Steele.

36. MARTIN: Good evening. I'm Martin Learner.

37. MRS. S: I'm happy to meet you.

38. MARTIN: What's that?

39. MRS. S: It's a dress from Rumania. It was my grandmother's dress.

40. WENDY: Mrs. Steele is Roberta's mother.

41. MARTIN: Fifth grade geography?

42. MRS. S: That's right.

43. MARTIN: What do you do, Mrs. Steele?

44. MRS. S: I'm a housewife. I'm raising three young children. I studied nursing.

45. HAL: Martin, this is Melissa's mother.

46. MARTIN: Hello. I'm Martin Learner.

47. MRS. R: Good evening. I'm Rachel Robertson.

48. MARTIN: I'm happy to meet you. This is Mrs. Steele, Melissa's mother.

49. MRS. R: We've met, thank you.

50. MARTIN: What do you do, Mrs. Robertson.

51. MRS. R: I'm a farmer.

52. MARTIN: A farmer!?

53. MRS. R: Yes, I farm five-hundred acres.

54. MARTIN: Wonderful! What's that?

55. MRS. R: Corn. Soybeans. And wheat. I grow them.

56. WENDY: Mrs. Robertson is Becky's mother too. Becky's in third grade.

57. MRS. R: They are studying food.

58. MARTIN: I see.

59. PAT: Hello, I'm Pat Bryan. Who are you?

60. MARTIN: I'm Martin Learner. I'm a reporter.

61. PAT: Where are you from, Martin?

62. MARTIN: I'm from Baltimore. What do you do?

63. PAT: I'm a farmer. And I'm a mechanic too. I farm a hundred acres. And I fix tractors.

64. MARTIN: What's that?

65. PAT: : I have a boy in the third grade. It's beans.

66. MARTIN: Soybeans.

67. PAT: : No. Red beans. I grow soybeans, red beans, and white beans. Last year I grew green beans and peas.

69. People often talk about their work. They give it a name and tell what action is performed. Listen to some sentences.

8. MARTIN: That's right. Thank you.

9. MRS. W: Mr. McCammon. This is Martin Learner.

10. MR. MC: Hello. I'm Malcolm McCammon. How are you?

11. MARTIN: Fine thanks. How are you? What do you do?

12. MR. MC: I'm Conrad's father.

13. MARTIN: What grade?

14. MR. MC: Second grade. I'm a father and a lawyer.

15. MARTIN: Where are you from?

16. MR. MC: I'm from Lawrence, Kansas. I studied at the university there. What do you do?

17. MARTIN: I'm a reporter for the Voice of America. I'm writing a story about schools.

18. MRS. W: This is Glen Edwards.

19. MARTIN: Hello. How are you?

20. GLEN: Fine thanks. How are you?

21. MARTIN: Fine thanks.

22. GLEN: Are you a father?

23. MR. MC: He's a reporter.

24. MARTIN: I'm a father too. What's that?

25. GLEN: It's corn.

26. MR. MC: It's red!

27. GLEN: Yes. It's interesting.

28. MARTIN: Your child is in third grade?

29. GLEN: Yes, my son is in third grade.

30. MARTIN: What do you do?

31. GLEN: I'm a gardener. I grow red corn.

32. MR. MC: He's a gardener. He's a banker too.

33. MARTIN: Is your son a gardener?

34. GLEN: : Yes. He grows carrots and onions. I grow corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and squash.

35. MARTIN: Mr. McCammon, are you a gardener?

36. MR. MC: Oh, no. But I'm a cook.

37. GLEN: : Yes, he's a good cook.

38. MR. MC: I don't cook red corn! I cook yellow corn and white corn, but I don't cook red corn.

39. MRS. W: Mr. Learner. Come meet Miss Frazetta. Tobi, this is Martin Learner.

40. TOBI: Good evening. Are you a teacher?

41. MARTIN: No, I'm a reporter.

42. TOBI: That's interesting. I'm a reporter too.

43. MARTIN: I write stories for radio.

44. TOBI: I write for the newspaper. Are you a parent?

45. MARTIN: Yes, but my children are in Baltimore.

46. TOBI: Are you from Baltimore?

47. MARTIN: Yes, I live in Baltimore.

48. TOBI: My daughter is in fourth grade.

49: MARTIN: I visited fifth grade today. What's that?

50. TOBI: It's a rock. They're studying rocks in science.

51. MARTIN: What's that?

52. MRS. R: Soybeans.

53. MARTIN: What's that?

54. PAT: It's beans.

55. MARTIN: What's that?

56. GLEN : It's corn.

Practice asking the question "What's that?" Ask about the items you really want to know the English word for. Write the words in your notebook so that you can practice them later.
