This is the second lesson of English USA. English USA teaches the English used in everyday situations. It helps you learn simple ways of expressing yourself in English. In this lesson, you will learn how to greet people you have met for the first time. You will also learn to introduce other people.

You will hear Martin Learner, the Voice of America reporter, at a reception where he meets several people for the first time.

3. In this lesson you will learn how to introduce other people and tell what work they do. You will hear Martin Learner at a reception where he meets an engineer, two accountants, and another reporter.

17. MELANIE: Fine thanks.

18. MARTIN: He's a reporter.

19. JIM: He's a reporter too.

15. JIM: At the airport?

16. VALERIE: Yes.

17. MELANIE: Mr. O'Brien is a reporter. And Mr. Learner is a

reporter too.

18. MARTIN / JIM: That's right. We're both reporters.

19. VALERIE: They are both reporters.

2. We often need to introduce ourselves or someone else to others. Notice how we introduce ourselves.

7. When a person introduces himself or herself, we respond by giving our name. Say "hello" and tell the person your name.

5. PETER: I'm Peter. Peter Greer. I'm fine thanks.

6. DEBBIE: Mr. Greer is an accountant.

7. JIM: Miss Genaux is an accountant too.

8. PETER: Pardon?

9. JIM: Miss Genaux is an accountant too.

10. VALERIE: Yes, I'm an accountant.

12. When you do not hear someone clearly and want the speaker to repeat, you can say "pardon." Listen again.

14. When you are introduced to someone you have already met you can say you have met. Listen again.
